All About Melasma

What is melasma?

Melasma is a disorder of the pigment producing cells called melanocytes resulting in patches, freckles, or spots that are usually on the face.  The spots are usually brown, tan, blue, or gray in color depending on your skin type.   Melasma could be triggered by factors like pregnancy and other hormonal changes, sun exposure, stress, certain medication/birth control changes and some supplements.  Unfortunately, melasma can be a big nuisance since it can be tough to treat and last for years.

There are other disorders like solar lentigos that can sometimes be confused with melasma so it is important to work with an expert before a diagnosis is made.  Dr William Bauer and nurse Kelly Conkin meet with our clients first as we develop a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan together.

What are some melasma or brown spot treatment options?

A wide range of topical treatments as well as oral medications can help with melasma including kojic acid, trans-examic acid, niacinamide, hydroquinone, retinols, and others.

Sunlight exposure is a huge trigger for melasma so we work with our clients to develop a prevention/risk modification plan, and consider treatments or procedures as needed for maintenance.  As we make progress we want to make sure you have great long term results as well!

At Valar Aesthetics we utilize a variety of procedures to treat melasma including IPL, chemical peels, and non-ablative laser treatments. A chemical peel is a professional grade exfoliating treatment that helps with texture, fine lines, discoloration, and acne. IPL is an energy treatment that uses pulses of intense light to treat discoloration, fine lines, acne, rosacea, other vascular (red) lesions, and wrinkles.
