What is AviClear?
AviClear is the new, original, FDA-Approved energy device for the treatment of mild to severe acne. This device aims to be a permanent acne solution by targeting sebaceous glands that produce the sebum (or skin oil) that causes acne breakouts. The laser energy shrinks these glands, resulting in fewer and milder acne breakouts.
With this treatment, there can be mild to moderate discomfort. A numbing agent cannot be used with this treatment, but the device has built in cooling technology to keep the treatment comfortable. A single treatment lasts 30 minutes. Prior to starting treatment, we use a triple cleanse system to eliminate any signs of oil on the surface of the skin to ensure the laser energy is targeting the oil underneath the skin. For the majority of all patients this procedure is very well tolerated and is more comfortable than many laser resurfacing procedures.
AviClear must be performed in a series of 3; single treatments are not effective for reducing or eliminating acne breakouts.
What Is The Procedure Like?
What Does Recovery
Look Like?
Recovery is short with this procedure. Most people can return to their normal skin care routine starting the following morning and don’t notice any redness or left over signs of having a procedure performed. Some people may experience redness for up to a day following the procedure. Some people notice itching and dryness of the skin for 1-4 weeks after the procedure. Some individuals also experience a post-treatment acne flare that behaves as a normal acne breakout.
We recommend avoiding any activities that will cause excessive sweating for the first 24 hours after treatment. Avoid chemical or physical exfoliants for a few days after treatment, as your skin will be more sensitive. Avoid other facial procedures such as waxing or dermaplaning for 2 weeks after treatment.
Risk and Benefits
Benefits?
How long do results last?
The results offered by AviClear are permanent changes to the skin. Laser energy shrinks the glands that produce excessive oil that results in breakouts, and this change lasts forever. This is the first FDA approved energy device to treat acne. Clinical trials are showing reduced or eliminated breakouts greater than 1 year after completing the series of 3 treatments.
Risks?
What to do before the procedure?
RISK:
The most common side effect of AviClear is the risk of developing blisters after being treated with the laser device. These are typically small, resolve after a week or two, and usually don’t leave behind scarring. All skin types are safe to treat with this device.
What to do before the procedure?
We recommend coming into the office with a face clean of any makeup or products. Let your provider know if you have used Accutane in the past 6 months. Avoid excessive sun exposure before, during, and after your procedure. Men should be clean shaven. Let your provider know if you have a history of cold sores, as this can be pretreated with an antiviral medicine to avoid an outbreak.
